Dr. Thomas Cawthorn

Dr. Thomas Cawthorn is a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with training in both adult and pediatric surgery. He is originally from Prince Edward Island and completed his undergraduate and medical school training at Queen’s University. Following medical school, Dr. Cawthorn moved to Calgary to complete residency training at the University of Calgary. He then completed subspeciality fellowship training in pediatric plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) through the University of Toronto.

 

Dr. Cawthorn provides comprehensive surgical care for a broad range of conditions covered by Alberta Healthcare. He does not see patients for non-insured (cosmetic) procedures. Consultations and follow-ups are done at the Bow River Plastic Surgery office, and all surgical procedures are completed at the Rockyview General Hospital. Dr. Cawthorn treats hand injuries (fractures, tendon/nerve/ligament injuries) and sees elective hand surgery consults (ie. carpal tunnel syndrome) at the Hand Clinic in Rockyview General Hospital.

 

In addition to his work at Bow River Plastic Surgery, Dr. Cawthorn has a busy pediatric practice at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. Dr. Cawthorn provides surgical care for children with traumatic injuries, congenital hand differences, peripheral nerve injuries, cleft lip & palate, and burns. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary with appointments in the Sections of Pediatric Surgery and Plastic Surgery. Through the University of Calgary, Dr. Cawthorn is actively involved in the education of medical students and resident physicians. Additionally, Dr. Cawthorn conducts clinical research in pediatric surgery, focusing on developing perioperative pathways to improve care for children undergoing surgery.
